Birdville ISD - Birdville High School Courtyard

North Richland Hills, TX

About the project

The Birdville High School courtyard, part of the 2022 Bond, was created in response to ongoing drainage issues. The district used this opportunity to enhance the overall aesthetics of the outdoor space, giving the students a place to enjoy lunch outside. To expand the courtyard, the existing exterior concrete and stacked block retaining walls were removed, allowing for extensive earthwork. A new underground storm system was installed to address the ongoing drainage concerns. Many of the existing trees were preserved while over 50 new trees were planted throughout the courtyard. A 1,980 SF standalone canopy was installed off the cafeteria, offering a shaded space for students to enjoy their lunch outdoors. Additional improvements included integral colored concrete, unit pavers, synthetic turf, limestone retaining walls, upgraded site lighting, and landscape/irrigation. The primary goal was to resolve the drainage issues and upgrade the space, all while providing a low-maintenance area for the school district. The courtyard was further enhanced with custom furniture including tables, cornhole boards, and ping-pong tables, creating a vibrant space where students can relax and enjoy time with friends for years to come!
