San Angelo ISD - McGill Elementary School

Originally built in 1940, McGill Elementary School has seen many additions and renovations over the decades. After a six-month collaboration with Parkhill, a West Texas architecture firm, San Angelo ISD (SAISD) decided to consolidate McGill and Austin Elementary Schools into a single, modern state-of-the-art campus. The plan addressed aging facilities, declining enrollment, and the need to optimize costs and resources. The new campus supports 500–600 students, maintaining small learning communities while improving educational environments and operational efficiency. Previously serving 240 students in four buildings (approximately 27,000 SF), McGill’s expanded campus now spans nearly 62,000 SF. The 34,558 SF addition includes 15 classrooms, a cafeteria, restrooms, a teacher workroom, and an updated entryway. The site features redesigned drop-off areas, a new parking lot, accessible pathways, a play court, a playground, and sustainability-focused landscaping. Upgrades also include improved emergency access and a strategically placed detention pond.

Reopening in September 2024, McGill Elementary reflects SAISD’s dedication to creating high-quality, resourceful learning spaces for students.

We thought it was a great opportunity for the kids from both schools to merge their school spirits by signing the beam,” said Michael McGuffin, Vice President of Construction for Lee Lewis Construction, Inc. “It gives the kids a common unity in that their names are combined and included in the new building that will bring them together.”
